Week 8 - Politics

Artist: Zhang Huan

Zhang Huan is a Chinese artist based in Shanghai and New York City. He has worked with many different types of art forms including performance art, painting and sculpting, but he has also done photography. Huan's photographic practice is undeniably linked to his cultural and political Chinese identity.

The connection to his cultural Chinese identity is clearly shown through the photographic series of his called 'Family Tree', 2000. The text that Huan has had written on his face is a direct link to his cultural background as it is his own language. These letters and words act as a symbol of culture, which were described by Huan himself as 'smothering us' and 'slowly turning our faces black'. Another cultural reference is what some of the text reads. Across his forehead the words say 'Move the Mountain by Fool', this is the name of a traditional Chinese story.

Some links to his political identity is also shown in the same series through the text on his forehead. There are a few symbols that reference the Gang of Four, this was a political faction made up of four Chinese Communist Party officials. They came to be of great significance during the Cultural Revolution in 1966-1976.

It is evident that Zhang Huan undeniably links his photographic and other artistic practices with his cultural and political Chinese identity.
